Well, life happens. Instead of coming back here as planned, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in mid January. My second bout of cancer, a scarier type this time (in 2011 I had breast cancer from which I fully recovered). I had surgery in January, and was treated with chemo after that. I have completed the chemo, and have 8-12 weeks to recover (the whole summer!) before I start another targeted treatment that may make me sick again for a few weeks. I have some possibly permanent side effects now—like peripheral neuropathy. So I join the crip community again, as we all eventually do. But meanwhile! Soon I will resume posting here, and collecting the wigs and turbans to go out in, as my compromised immune system recovers. I can’t wait to return to NYC cultural and political life! It killed me to watch the anti-Zionist mobilizations and student encampments from my sofa, along with all the nightlife and art exhibits my friends have been posting on instagram, when I SO wanted to be at everything going on. So much fomo! But soon, I can join in. I even get to go back to the gym soon.
I'm so sorry to hear you've been sick, Lisa. I've missed your writing. I hope the summer months are restorative, and, selfishly, that we're all gifted more of your voice on this fraught political moment.
